Lytx achieves better acoustics for employee wellness with Simple Baffles and EchoScreens
About Lytx
Lytx is a San Diego-based company that provides data analytics and services for the transportation industry. As a commitment to the health of its employees, Lytx hired ID Studios to design its office space, and incorporated a gym to support and encourage the well-being of its staff.
The Challenge
With sound-reflective equipment, hard surfaces, and excessively loud, high-energy music, the typical fitness center or weight room is an acoustic nightmare. A study from Australia’s National Acoustic Laboratories found that some gyms come equipped with blaring music, often as loud as 99 decibels.
Sounds above 85 decibels are considered to be harmful, depending on how long you’re exposed to them. When designing their new office gym, Lytx along with ID Studios wanted to encourage the health of its employees, not become a detriment to it.
The Solution
ID Studios designed Lytx’s in-house employee gym with occupant wellness as a priority—not an afterthought. By using acoustic solutions from Kirei, they were able to design a fitness space for Lytx employees that wasn’t too noisy to enjoy.
Considering the common causes of commotion in gyms, ID Studios employed our custom cut EchoScreens to cover hard surfaces prone to reflecting sound. The screens effectively absorb sound that would have otherwise reverberated throughout the space, adding more chaos. Even more EchoScreens (3 Little Birds Triptych) were suction-cupped onto the gym’s glass walls, offering both sound absorption and added privacy. To help control acoustics in the weight room, designers installed Kirei Simple Baffes to absorb sound and add bold color to the space for eye-catching appeal.
The Result
The bold, sleek look of Kirei’s acoustic solutions gave the fitness area a design that incorporated Lytx’s modern, people-focused brand, without the typical noise problems of today’s gyms. Success of the design was validated when Lytx received its annual employee survey results, where employees identified the new building as one of the most positive, impactful changes in the company.
